Sam [00:00:07]:
Hello and welcome to episode 537 of the Chris and Sam podcast.
Chris [00:00:26]:
I’m Chris.
Sam [00:00:27]:
And I’m Sam. Welcome along to your weekly fix of randoms, technology and life brought to you by two people from New Zealand. And it’s a big shout out to our Filipino fans.
Chris [00:00:36]:
What, what’s the Filipino fans thing?
Sam [00:00:39]:
The Filipino fans is the story that you put in here, but you probably don’t really know what’s going on. We had a huge spike of traffic this week. 2000 episodes in one day, which is pretty good for us. And that’s because there’s a podcast with a very similar name to us and they are Filipino. And.
Chris [00:00:56]:
Yeah, okay. So I did want to get to that, but I feel like I need to go there now.
Sam [00:01:02]:
I know I was, yeah, going to take you there.
Chris [00:01:04]:
So did you cause this? I caused this. So I came across this, this podcast. It’s called Sam and Chris the Podcast. So I thought that was hilarious. So I checked them out. They are in Bahrain, actually. So they are. Yeah.
Chris [00:01:24]:
So they, yeah, they’re in Bayrain. There are a couple of Filipino boys that do a podcast. And I was like, oh, I wonder if we should compete with them, you know, like set something up. So we’re competing with them or we should elaborate with them. So I had a look. They’re younger than us. They’ve been doing better looking than us.
Sam [00:01:44]:
They’ve been doing it less time than us and have way more followers.
Chris [00:01:48]:
Yeah, they, I’m not gonna say they’re smarter than us, but they are multilingual and we’re not. So maybe.
Sam [00:01:54]:
Okay.
Chris [00:01:55]:
So I decided collaboration was the thing. So I’ve been in touch with them.
Sam [00:01:59]:
Oh, no.
Chris [00:01:59]:
And we have got a date. We’re gonna jump on Zoom. I’m gonna check the date with you obviously after this. But I wanted, I didn’t want, I, I, this was supposed to be a surprise and you weren’t supposed to know this was happening.
Sam [00:02:10]:
I knew something was up. Cause I saw this big Spiken trap because they started, they followed us on Facebook and another 40 something other rando people. All these people are following us.
Chris [00:02:20]:
Okay.
Sam [00:02:21]:
So I’m assuming they’ve mentioned it.
Chris [00:02:23]:
I, I don’t know. I, I, I didn’t see whether they’d.
Sam [00:02:26]:
I watched a video clip of theirs and I didn’t know what was going on. They seem to talk to people in public. In a shopping mall.
Chris [00:02:34]:
Yeah, yeah.
Sam [00:02:35]:
A lot of their stuff.
Chris [00:02:36]:
They were the. The things I saw. They were at like, trade shows and art shows and stuff. Okay, okay, people. So, yeah, anyway, we are going to.
Sam [00:02:44]:
Do a Chris and Sam podcast with the. Sam and Chris. The podcast.
Chris [00:02:49]:
Yeah, exactly. It should be fantastic.
Sam [00:02:51]:
Off the tongue.
Chris [00:02:52]:
It’s so funny.
Sam [00:02:53]:
How did you come across it? Were you trying to. Were you just typing our one in.
Chris [00:02:56]:
Randomly doing stuff in the long weekend in the morning? And I was like, ah. And then I. I saw their name and I was like, that’s weird. And I checked it out and then I was like, I wonder if I can get hold of them. So I did. So it’s so funny.
Sam [00:03:08]:
What did they say, though, when you reached out?
Chris [00:03:10]:
They’re like, we’re so honored, sir. They call me sir every sentence has.
Sam [00:03:15]:
They have not listened to our podcast and they do not know about you.
Chris [00:03:19]:
They are so honored to be doing this collaboration. I said, look, I’m not going to tell Sam about it till after we record it on Thursday. So after that I’ll confirm the time. We’ve got a time.
Sam [00:03:31]:
What’s the time zone there? Do we know that?
Chris [00:03:33]:
12. No, nine hours behind us. So it’s 12 o’ clock there. It’s 9:00pm here. And that’s sort of the timeframe we’re looking at.
Sam [00:03:42]:
Yeah. Okay, sounds interesting.
Chris [00:03:44]:
So anyway, so that was that. The other thing I wanted to mention, off the top, before I forget, was Jeff. My mate, Jeff Penny, you know Jeff. He hadn’t. We hadn’t caught up for ages, so we. We ended up catching up on the phone, having a bit of a chat.
Sam [00:03:59]:
Yeah.
Chris [00:03:59]:
And then he keeps messaging me or phoning me because he’s like, oh, I haven’t talked. I haven’t checked out the podcast for a while. I’m catching up. I’m just a little bit behind. What.
Sam [00:04:10]:
What’s the ad?
Chris [00:04:11]:
I don’t remember, but it sounds like I should have written it down because I did look it up. The mayo. The mayo story.
Sam [00:04:19]:
So there’s people stealing mayo in suitcases and we didn’t know why. And I found it really perplexing and has Jeff got the answer?
Chris [00:04:27]:
Jeff goes, oh, yeah. Did you figure out why? Do you know why?
Sam [00:04:30]:
Hang on now. On a. On a weirdness scale of 1 being for eating mayo like normal and 10 being absolute batshit, where’s it. Where’s it in the scale?
Chris [00:04:41]:
6 and 7? 6 or 7? I. It’s. It’s. I don’t think you would have gave. Guessed it.
Sam [00:04:46]:
No, we didn’t even have an idea. Exactly. So I’m excited.
Chris [00:04:49]:
Mayo and the Whitakers Chocolate are connected.
Sam [00:04:54]:
Okay.
Chris [00:04:54]:
It’s a criminal syndicate y operating out of Auckland Y that was stealing to order, putting in a container and sending it to the islands.
Sam [00:05:03]:
Ah, yeah. Okay, that makes sense.
Chris [00:05:09]:
It does, it does, it does. But I was like, oh, I didn’t know. Didn’t occur to me. So I think that he found that out through the Food Foodies connection.
Sam [00:05:21]:
Cuz friend of the podcast. I’ve never spoken to her, but Pauline Stockhausen is currently packing up her house in New Zealand and moving to Tonga.
Chris [00:05:29]:
I thought she was already in there.
Sam [00:05:30]:
No, they kept going backwards and forwards and they built a house over there. But now she’s fully committing going to live over there and do work from there.
Chris [00:05:37]:
Oh, okay.
Sam [00:05:37]:
So pretty big, pretty move, but sounds exciting for her.
Chris [00:05:41]:
Yeah, yeah.
Sam [00:05:42]:
Talking about. Talking about exciting and one of our fans and all that stuff. So a while ago, I think we spoke about Sam Harvey because remember, Lauren at work really wanted me to talk about the guy that was doing the backyard marathon. And he’s kept running forever. And I don’t think he quite won it or didn’t get the world record, but he was going forever. So there’s a thing called Dead Cow Gully. It’s an event, right? I think if they win it, they get some cow pats. Now.
Chris [00:06:10]:
Cool.
Sam [00:06:11]:
Yes. Now the funny. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you have to run 6.7km every hour and that. That’s it. So if you do it fast enough, you have a little rest, and if you don’t, well, you’re out. And the Sam Harvey competed in it. He’s one of the best in the world at this random stuff.
Sam [00:06:30]:
And he has set a new world record for this. So how many laps do you think he did?
Chris [00:06:39]:
So how many hours?
Sam [00:06:40]:
Yeah, pretty much how many hours. And he stopped because he could not go any further and just collapsed on the ground, which I assume is a normal day for him.
Chris [00:06:48]:
Okay, when you say day, it sounds like it’s less than 24, but I’m gonna say it’s more than 24. I’m gonna say it’s 32.
Sam [00:06:58]:
So he didn’t win it. This Australian called Phil Gore broke the record. What was your guess again?
Chris [00:07:05]:
32 hours. Okay, so I did an Oxfam race, the first Oxfam race I did. So Oxfam did a. It was a trail walk and it was 100Ks, and you had to do the walk in under 36 hours. If it was over 36 hours. You were. Yeah, you’re eliminated. Like they.
Chris [00:07:30]:
They cleared the track after 36 hours because it just take. That’s too long. So we managed the first one, I think in just. I think. Oh, I can’t remember. I did it twice. The first one I think we did in 30.
Sam [00:07:43]:
Yeah.
Chris [00:07:44]:
32. And the second one we did in 30. So under 30, which was much better than they did at under 24. One. Yeah.
Sam [00:07:54]:
I’m still trying to find the story. I don’t know. I just want to know the actual results. Not because there’s all these updates. This is. Okay. This is really weird to not be able to find the story that I literally read today. Yeah.
Sam [00:08:09]:
Only two runners were left. Harvey and this Australian, Phil Gore. They broke the world record. What was your guess?
Chris [00:08:16]:
32 hours.
Sam [00:08:17]:
Okay. 118 laps.
Chris [00:08:19]:
Whoa.
Sam [00:08:21]:
He was delirious and in pain. There he is on the ground, probably wishing. I don’t know.
Chris [00:08:26]:
I wish I had better life choices. I should have been a Wall street banker.
Sam [00:08:31]:
So this was one of the coldest nights out there. The previous record was 116. He wanted to go for 150. His mum, I think, said, he’s crazy, he’ll just keep going. He wanted to smash it. He was determined to do 150.
Chris [00:08:42]:
So he beat the record of 116. But somebody else beat him.
Sam [00:08:47]:
I don’t know. These stories are so terr. Like, honestly, it’s the worst reporting in the world. And now, I don’t know. In 2023, he helped us, Phil Gore guy, make the record at 102 while battling pneumonia. It was super cold. Anyway, doesn’t matter. This dude did 118 laps.
Sam [00:09:06]:
I assume the other guy won it. I don’t know. It literally does not tell me. But the funny thing is this is around the corner from where Jamie Oxley moved to.
Chris [00:09:13]:
Oh, right.
Sam [00:09:14]:
Like it’s just down the road from him. And he sent me. He sent me the link and. And on YouTube, they had one camera set up at like their little base station. So on the hour was basically when anything exciting happened.
Chris [00:09:27]:
Does he walk past the camera?
Sam [00:09:28]:
Well, no, they were sitting. Well, the one I saw, I watched a bit of it. They were in the tent and a buzzer, hooter thing went bell. And they’re like two minutes. And he’s like, oh, yeah. And I think it was the other guy. It wasn’t the Sam Harvey. And they were just jamming food in his mouth, hoping that he could eat it.
Sam [00:09:42]:
That must have been around about a hundred hours, maybe and they’re like, yeah, keep eating. And then they’re trying to give him some water. And he was, like, choking that down. And then the buzzer went for a minute and he goes. And he’s putting his shoes on, and they’re just watching him, and he can barely do his shoelaces up. And then they’re like, okay, 30 seconds. And then they, like, lift him up and almost carry him out of the tent. And then sort of off you go, mate.
Sam [00:10:06]:
And they just. There was four of them at point, and they just stumbled off down the road.
Chris [00:10:11]:
It’s not fun, like. So we started at dawn.
Sam [00:10:16]:
How confident were you going into the Ox Fan at that point?
Chris [00:10:19]:
The. The first time? Because I’d never done anything before. I’m like, it’s only walking. Yeah. I’ve walked all my life. I should be fine. It was the dumbest thing because we did bugger all training.
Sam [00:10:29]:
How far did you get?
Chris [00:10:31]:
The whole thing?
Sam [00:10:32]:
No, no. But when did you start hurting, do you think?
Chris [00:10:35]:
I was pretty good, actually. I think I. I remember coming down the last leg of things. We were going down a whole bunch of stairs. Like, it was like, from a. It’s like the hookanui Trail thing.
Sam [00:10:48]:
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Chris [00:10:49]:
Like, loads of steps like that. And every time I stepped down, it felt like glass in my knees.
Sam [00:10:54]:
Oh, wow.
Chris [00:10:54]:
It was painful.
Sam [00:10:56]:
Yeah.
Chris [00:10:56]:
But what I was gonna say is we started at dawn. We went all through the day, all through the night. You know, we had a few. Couple of rest breaks, obviously, in food and what have you. And then about 2 in the morning, I’m gonna say 2, 3, 4 in the morning. I’m hallucinating.
Sam [00:11:13]:
Yeah.
Chris [00:11:14]:
We’re going through woods, and I’m like, that wolf is getting closer. It’s. There’s a werewolf thing.
Sam [00:11:20]:
Does anyone else hallucinating at the same time?
Chris [00:11:21]:
I think other people. Everybody’s in their own bubble at this point. So you. We had to be in teams. There was. Had to be four of us together.
Sam [00:11:29]:
Yeah.
Chris [00:11:30]:
And people would drop out, and you couldn’t have less than three. Okay. And we had a third person wanting to drop out, in which case we were stuffed.
Sam [00:11:39]:
Yeah.
Chris [00:11:39]:
And we said. And I made him. I forced him to go to the next check. Chicken.
Sam [00:11:45]:
Yeah.
Chris [00:11:45]:
Because the next chicken I could. The two of us managed to graft onto another two people so we could continue.
Sam [00:11:52]:
Okay. Okay.
Chris [00:11:53]:
They were happy with that. But if you had two, the problem was if somebody.
Sam [00:11:56]:
Yeah. So you could split teams.
Chris [00:11:57]:
So if. If somebody had an accident, one person can stay with them. One can get help. Yeah, that was the. The thing. And so if you had less than three, you. You’re off the course. So I made Mike get to this checkpoint, and he’s never forgiven me.
Chris [00:12:13]:
I would have thought he would be like, no, thanks for helping me out. No, he hates.
Sam [00:12:16]:
Well, he holds a grudge.
Chris [00:12:17]:
Holds a grudge.
Sam [00:12:18]:
How long ago was this? This is a while ago.
Chris [00:12:20]:
Oh, it was a good decade ago. Yeah. At least. Yeah.
Sam [00:12:23]:
That’s crazy. Did I tell you about me trying to get a McDonald’s milkshake the other day?
Chris [00:12:28]:
I think you did, actually.
Sam [00:12:29]:
Yes, I did. Eh. With the crazy guy trying to operate the machine.
Chris [00:12:32]:
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Sam [00:12:33]:
Okay. I wasn’t sure. I wasn’t sure. You.
Chris [00:12:35]:
You can tell the story. No, pretty.
Sam [00:12:40]:
I didn’t do it on the podcast, though.
Chris [00:12:41]:
Eh, no.
Sam [00:12:42]:
Tried to go Starbucks first. There was no car park. My backup is, let’s go to McDonald’s. We’ll get a biscoff milkshake. There’s a picture of it. It looks like a white milkshake with biscoff on the bottom. Biscoff on the top. Sounds amazing.
Sam [00:12:55]:
Get to the window, order it. The girl on the box thing. Intercom goes, oh, sorry, we don’t have any chocolate soft serve. And I was like, oh, okay. I thought it was made with vanilla. That’s what it looked like in the picture. And she goes, oh, I have to go check with my manager. I was like, okay.
Sam [00:13:15]:
So she goes away for a little bit, and she comes back, goes, oh, the manager says, that’s okay. Drive through to the first window. I’m like, okay. So I go round and I pay for these two drinks, and then this dude appears like he’s run from the front of the McDonald’s to this pay window. And he sort of leans out. He goes, oh, hey, I’m so sorry. The machine’s broken. The machine.
Sam [00:13:35]:
It won’t make the drink. I can. Oh, have you paid? I said, yes. He goes, oh, okay. I can give you. I’ll give you some free Cokes, whatever you want. Some free Cokes. Okay.
Sam [00:13:46]:
And I’ll give you a credit. We’ll do the credit reversal on your card. Do you just want to give me your card? And then I’ll just walk from here to the front of the. To the restaurant, and I’ll just sort it out, and then you can come in and we’ll do it. And I was like, no, I’m not just going to give you my card. I’ll drive down there, park, and I’ll come In and he goes, yeah, okay, sweet. That’s. Yeah, fair enough, Fair enough.
Sam [00:14:08]:
Sounds good. Sounds all good. So then I walk in and he comes up and he gets to the checkout thing or whatever, and he’s like. And he’s mashing like 50 buttons, and he’s putting in his PIN code, which seems to be about 12 digits long. And he’s. And it’s not working, whatever he’s trying to do. So he’s doing this for a couple of minutes.
Chris [00:14:28]:
I bet you it was working. I bet you they made. It’s more secure than the nuclear codes. Yeah, I think Trump is probably easier for him to launch nukes into Israel probably than it is for this refund.
Sam [00:14:40]:
Of a McDonald’s, any refund. So he’s doing. Yeah, so he’s doing all of this and he’s mashing around and he goes, oh, sweet, here you go. And the FOS machine lights up and it says, tap or insert your card. And I’m quite used to just inserting my card to avoid excess charges. Normally when you pay.
Chris [00:15:00]:
Yeah, yeah.
Sam [00:15:00]:
Anyway, so I insert it, put in my pin, and it goes, yeah. And I pull it out and then his whole system freezes. And this big red window comes up on his screen and he’s like, oh, no, it’s all frozen. This is gonna take up to 90 seconds to reset. The whole system is resetting right now. And I’m like, okay. So I’m like, whatever. And then as I’m doing standing there with this dude, I’m looking over at the drive through window and there’s a woman with a rather large drink container which looks like it’s got soft serve in it.
Sam [00:15:33]:
And she grabs this bag of Biscoff and she’s pouring it on top of this cup. And I say to him, what is she doing? And I’m pointing like this. And he goes, what do you mean? And I said, well, it looks to me that she’s making the Biscoff milkshake. And if she is, that’s what I want. And he goes, what? So he runs. He runs the. It’s only 10 steps. So Olympics runs the 10 steps to get.
Chris [00:15:59]:
How young was this dude? Is he. Is he an old guy? Is he.
Sam [00:16:02]:
No, he’s like late 30s, early 40s. Oh, yeah, this guy. Yeah, yeah. And he’s got those blingus. This bigger. I was trying to read what the brand of watch was. Cause it was so shiny and massive. And I was.
Sam [00:16:15]:
And I couldn’t work out if it was super expensive or not. But I was watching it anyway.
Chris [00:16:18]:
Didn’t say rump on it?
Sam [00:16:20]:
No, no, I think he’s still waiting on that. He ran across and he’s talking to this girl and then he basically tells them that the machine that mixes this drink, even though the drink they just made looks identical to the photo anyway, is broken, which just must be a mixer. Anyway, that’s all good. So he comes back and then there’s this young guy at the drive through window trying to sort some stuff out and he sees all of this and he freaks out a bit and he just starts yelling out, paul, Paul. What? What’s happening? What’s happening with the machine? The machine. The machine or something. And the guy that’s serving me is like, don’t worry, give him Cokes. Just give him Cokes.
Sam [00:16:58]:
The machine. Anyway, I’m like, what is going on? So then he goes back to his machine, still frozen, absolutely stuffed.
Chris [00:17:05]:
He bricked his machine.
Sam [00:17:08]:
Exactly. I was like, that fills me with confidence. No McDonald’s nuclear codes for you. Anyway, he just wanders off like he disappears and he’s gone somewhere. He’s out the back and he comes back and he’s just got cash in his hand. So he had to go get the cash from a safe, I guess, which seems like it must have been quicker to get to than this freaking computer screen. And he goes, I’m so sorry, here’s your money. Okay.
Sam [00:17:34]:
And then I left and his screen was still broken.
Chris [00:17:36]:
So you’ve still not experienced the Biscoff. Do you think you will?
Sam [00:17:42]:
Yeah, one day.
Chris [00:17:43]:
One day I. I got a couple of things I wanted to talk about, so one just, just made me laugh a little bit because, I mean, there’s a lot not rosy going on at the moment in the world with, with Donald Trump and his warmongering efforts. But I did find this amusing, which I don’t think I’ve seen much news about, so I thought I’d share it with you because you might not have known this.
Sam [00:18:09]:
Okay.
Chris [00:18:10]:
So last week, early last week, Pakistan nominated Trump for a Nobel Prize prize. Can anybody nominate anybody for his intercession in the recent Pakistan Indian flare up? So I don’t know if anyone can nominate anyone, but they were Pakistan and it was a problem between Pakistan and India, so it makes sense that they did it.
Sam [00:18:32]:
Yeah, okay.
Chris [00:18:33]:
But two days later, Trump conducts strikes on Iran and Pakistan condemns it and then withdraw, draws the nomination. And I was, I thought that was funny because I was like, ah. Because he’s always been going on about the speech prosecution but now that he’s bombed Iran and he’s getting people to stop bombing Iran, he goes, I need a peace prize because I stopped the beat you with the one bombing. I don’t think that’s how it works.
Sam [00:19:00]:
No, he doesn’t know how anything works. He’s an idiot.
Chris [00:19:05]:
Okay. But I have got something I wanted to share about from Ukraine. They have this thing called the Brave One Marketplace. And we got a. There’s a video that I’m getting this from and we’ll put the link in the show notes. But basically I was pretty, pretty negative about it when I first heard about. Now this is terrible. Okay, so basically it’s a gamification of war.
Chris [00:19:27]:
Right?
Sam [00:19:28]:
Okay, Right.
Chris [00:19:29]:
So drone operators in Ukraine have points for hitting infantry units.
Sam [00:19:38]:
And what. But what do they get with the points?
Chris [00:19:40]:
Yeah, that’s what I’m getting to. So the main ones are. That was mentioned in the video that I recall, were infantry themselves damaging tanks, destroying tanks or destroying artillery systems.
Sam [00:19:50]:
Right, yeah.
Chris [00:19:51]:
And you got different points and they’re very carefully calibrated these points for, you know, and I’ll explain. It’s a proper gamification, as a proper gamification. So to get the points you need, it requires the footage showing the damage being done. Like you have to verify that.
Sam [00:20:08]:
You have. Yeah, yeah, right, right, yeah.
Chris [00:20:10]:
Which is fine. But the key. One of the key points about that is this goes into their database of damage assessment. So they have a database of all the damage that’s being done in the. The battlefield, which is pretty impressive.
Sam [00:20:24]:
Yeah, that makes sense. Yeah. Yeah.
Chris [00:20:25]:
Because a lot of, you know, you heard the term fog of war.
Sam [00:20:28]:
Yeah.
Chris [00:20:28]:
Nobody knows what’s going on. Well, this, you’ve got actual data, what’s actually happening. So that was cool. But then the points, as he was saying, they used by the unit to order more drones and equipment. And this Brave One Marketplace is all the different things they can do. And it is. It sounds like a game, a video game, because it’s like, do you want night vision on that drone? Do you want this sort of thing on that drone? What sort of ordinance do you want on the drone? What type of drone do you want? So there’s all this different stuff that they can buy. Right.
Sam [00:21:02]:
Is this to slow them down? Because wouldn’t in a normal war, you’d request something and you’d either get. Or you wouldn’t. Or you’d get a more budget version.
Chris [00:21:12]:
Yeah. So it’s very clever and it is a game changer. So that’s the point. So what this means ultimately is the most effective drone operators get the most equipment. Because what would normally happen is they’d say we’ve got 10 teams out there, we’ve got 100 drones, we’ll give 10 each.
Sam [00:21:32]:
Okay.
Chris [00:21:33]:
Whereas in this one, that dude is smoking all these tanks.
Sam [00:21:37]:
So it makes more sense to give him the better stuff.
Chris [00:21:39]:
He’s pulling it rather than us pushing it as it were from the supply. He’s pulling it. So it makes it more efficient in the overall purpose. Yeah. Plus the marketplace, cause they’re innovating new things all the time as we know has reviews give the stars on the the stuff and feedback on it from the operators in the field that are actually using it. Not from some hoity to it, that maybe saw it in a test thing. Dude, when you do this, make sure you do that so it works properly. All that is on the thing which all the operators are looking at.
Chris [00:22:15]:
So it makes them all more effective.
Sam [00:22:17]:
Yeah. Okay. Plus.
Chris [00:22:21]:
Because of this gamification, they can identify who the best operators are and move them around and they turn them into trainers or they put them onto. To the high, you know, high value targets. Yeah, stuff like that. So this whole thing, because at first I was like, oh, you’re putting points on people, it’s terrible. Yeah. But when you put it from this logistics supply point of view, it’s.
Sam [00:22:46]:
So do you think that was came up with from like an ex game developer?
Chris [00:22:53]:
Yes. Did it talk about the guy that created this? It did mention his name and I can’t remember now, I didn’t write it down in the video, but he’s the minister for D digital transformation or something.
Sam [00:23:04]:
Okay.
Chris [00:23:05]:
For the country.
Sam [00:23:05]:
Yeah.
Chris [00:23:06]:
And he’s the one that put this through. So from the sounds of it, it does sound like he’s. He, he’s a gamer, I mean, I’m guessing. So. Yeah. And they did say that at one point in the thing they went, oh, we’ve got a strategic issue, we need more of this. And they doubled the points on one of the things and within. Or they adjusted the points, I should say, on one of the things and within a month they doubled the effectiveness in that area.
Sam [00:23:36]:
Far out. So because they want get the points.
Chris [00:23:40]:
So you tend to think of these innovations as just, you know, what they’re doing with the drones itself. But this is the whole system behind it and the logistics behind it. I was very impressed.
Sam [00:23:52]:
Interesting. I was in Taup for the long weekend, just been.
Chris [00:23:56]:
Oh, that’s right, yeah.
Sam [00:23:57]:
Saw Boom, boom, the dinosaur sculpture thing. I’LL show you. It’s.
Chris [00:24:01]:
Don’t know what that is.
Sam [00:24:03]:
It’s a big stainless steel dinosaur on top of a metal block structure. It’s the second thing in a sculpture park. It cost over a hundred thousand dollars and it’s upset a few locals. Anyway, I’ll show you a photo later because there’s no point showing you here, but it’s in a real weird spot like. Anyway, that doesn’t matter. Saw that.
Chris [00:24:23]:
The weird spot. The whole sculpture park is a weird spot.
Sam [00:24:25]:
Or if you, if you know Topo, you drive in, you go over the bridge where the station is, come around the corner on the left is Countdown, that’s being rebuilt right now. And the sculpture is right on your right, just there, like behind it, next to a tree right there. So you’ve got a park sort of in the park and then walk back down this way. Whereas I thought it was going to be further towards the lake.
Chris [00:24:49]:
Okay.
Sam [00:24:49]:
That’s the only thing. Anyway, went to Lone Star, tell you a story about that. Had some vouchers, thought we’d.
Chris [00:24:55]:
So Lone Star’s a restaurant chain for people outside of New Zealand? Yep.
Sam [00:24:58]:
Big American type food.
Chris [00:25:01]:
Yeah. Steaks and stuff.
Sam [00:25:02]:
Steaks and stuff. And chicken. Yeah. So that’s all right. Went there, sat down, that was all good. Our waitress was probably between 18 and 20 and she’s like, hi, can I take your order?
Chris [00:25:15]:
An old man Sam says, I’m like.
Sam [00:25:17]:
Yeah, sweet ass, that’s all good. Do you have on the drinks menu it goes, we have Pepsi Mountain milkshakes.
Chris [00:25:24]:
No, no, sorry.
Sam [00:25:27]:
If they did, I still wouldn’t have got one. I’ll tell you in a way, Pepsi, whatever. Pepsi Mountain Dew and friends is what their thing says. Okay, so do you have Pepsi Max or a sugar free lemonade? No. Oh, really? No. Do you have anything that’s sugar free? No. Okay, I’ll just have this. And Sarah just goes, I’ll just have water.
Sam [00:25:57]:
Okay. What would you like to order? We’d like this as an entree and this is our mains. Okay. And then she’s scribbling something down. Off she goes. A different waitress brings out the entree and she puts it down. And I said, hey, excuse me, random question. She goes, I’m all about the random questions.
Chris [00:26:17]:
Oh, nice.
Sam [00:26:18]:
So I was like, yeah, she’s cool.
Chris [00:26:19]:
She’s older than the other one. Yes, I’m gathering. Yeah, yeah.
Sam [00:26:22]:
And I said, do you have Pepsi Max or sugar free drinks? She goes, yeah, of course we do. I was like, oh, cool. Can we get one of those, because our waitress said, you didn’t have any. And she goes, oh, that’s weird. I said, yes, yes, it is. So she wanted. She goes, now, everyone else in this restaurant is busy. There’s people everywhere, but they’re looking after obviously, their set tables.
Sam [00:26:47]:
So we eat this entree thing, which was good. Food was good, I will state that. And then the waitress we had comes over and goes, what? And she goes, oh, okay, every. Good. And I’m like, yeah, it’s good. She goes, okay, are you ready for your dessert now? I’m like, no, we’re ready for our mains, which hasn’t come yet. Oh, okay. Just wandered off.
Sam [00:27:17]:
And I’m like, I don’t know what’s happening now.
Chris [00:27:19]:
It fills you with confidence.
Sam [00:27:21]:
It fills me with confidence.
Chris [00:27:22]:
Now, just for those of you that are not in the podcasting world, these are the sorts of things that we do, because this is why we podcast, is because when crap like this happens, instead of sitting there swearing, we just go, oh, this is going to make a great podcast.
Sam [00:27:38]:
I know, it’s a. Sorry. No, you’re right. It’s a special way of looking at life every day. I’m just like, damn it. So that was all good. And then so we have the mains and the other waitress brings it out. Like that’s how they do it, you know, it’s all good.
Sam [00:27:54]:
We’re looking around, everybody’s busy as there’s all these people coming in. The original waitress, the young one, she obviously sees someone she knows, so she’s hugging this random customer. That’s all good. And then for some reason, there’s some stairs that go up into a mezzanine floor thing. And there’s all these kids on the stairs, like five or six of them all hanging around, just, I don’t know, wasting time until their food turns up at the table. And this young waitress is just talking to them, like, talking to them non stop. And we can see that, and she can see us seeing that, and she made eye contact with us and still stood there doing it. Then she wandered off into the kitchen for a bit while everybody else was super busy.
Sam [00:28:34]:
And we’re sitting there and we’re sitting there and literally nobody comes back ever. Nobody comes to get our plate or ask if we want dessert. It must have been 25 minutes maybe. So, yeah, we just got up and we sort of left and we paid with our voucher and. And they said, oh, how was it? And we’re like, oh, you know, the food was great. No problem with the food. But I said, you know, don’t know what to say. But this happened with this person.
Sam [00:29:02]:
And they were like, oh, did she have glasses or a large belt buckle? I said, oh, belt buckle girl. Oh, yep. Okay.
Chris [00:29:13]:
That’s the name of this episode. Belt buckle girl.
Sam [00:29:17]:
Yeah. And that brings us to the end of the episode. If you want to follow us, come check us [email protected] or tcast.com. oh, we better. When we talk to the Filipino guys, we better just drop that in every couple of minutes.
Chris [00:29:31]:
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Sam [00:29:32]:
So their audience can listen to.
Chris [00:29:33]:
Well, that is the link I gave them. So that’s when you said, oh, we’ve had this big spike in viewers. I’m like, there’s two of them. There’s 500 episodes. I bet they both just downloaded all the episodes.
Sam [00:29:46]:
Oh, well, no, I think there’s a whole bunch of people anyway, so that’s cool. Check us out. Come say hi. Heard of a weird story, let us know. Point us in that direction. Until next time. I’m Sam.
Chris [00:29:55]:
I’m Chris.
Sam [00:29:56]:
See ya.
Chris [00:29:56]:
