Summary

Sam is onsite at Fieldays 2026, chatting with Harry from PostMate about their clever invention that makes fence post removal safer and faster.

We hear the backstory of how a Kiwi farmer turned a simple idea into a global product, and learn how a once potentially dangerous and time consuming job of fence post removal has been transformed into a fast and safe process, with examples of fence lines being pulled out in minutes.

There’s feedback from impressed farmers, talk of international expansion, and Harry answers one of our random questions.

All this and much more in this week’s episode.

Sam [00:00:21]:
Okay, guys, I'm here at Fielddays 2026. I'm with Harry from PostMate. Now, if you've ever struggled removing a post, don't worry, PostMate is going to be here to help you. We're going to all about it. It looks like a very simple idea, but it's one of those ones where people have not thought of it before for some reason. And Harry's going to give us the whole backstory behind it.

Harry [00:00:41]:
Oh well, thank you very much. So pulling posts around the world has always been a two person, slow, dangerous job. I'm sure many people listening have pulled posts and essentially it's going to. You're underneath the loader, you wrap a chain around it and you pull it up. It can be very slow, very dangerous. PostMate turns that into a one person safe job. Now essentially how it works is the chain goes one side, the post mate, which is a spool, goes the other side. And as the spool rolls up the post, it tightens the chain.

Harry [00:01:18]:
You're making it nice and easy to remove the post. You can put the post wherever you like because the moment you put it down, it automatically unspools the chain.

Sam [00:01:27]:
This just seems like a no brainer. They've got a great video where a tractor's driving along, no one else involved, just lifting out post post. The time savings alone must make this thing worthwhile.

Harry [00:01:39]:
Yeah, we've had 200 meter fence lines pulled out in under four minutes and that's with just one person and the PostMate.

Sam [00:01:48]:
Whereabouts did this get invented and when did it first become the product that we're seeing today?

Harry [00:01:53]:
So there is an outstanding farmer in Matamata, his name is Warren Storey and he's a dairy farmer and he comes up with all sorts of kind of inventions and he created, he just like everyone else said there must be a better. And as simplistic as it is, that's Warren who birthed the idea of the post mate. And now we're eight months after launch in six countries and solving solutions all around the world.

Sam [00:02:19]:
Six countries. That's impressive. And obviously like we see this thing and it just works. It's so simple. You've got a really large version in the back there. What's the story with that thing?

Harry [00:02:30]:
Yeah, so I'll tell you the story. I won't say the name of the company but there is a. Just like our normal fence posts, they're out there in much bigger scale. There's one big project in New Zealand that is 30 meter poles, 12 meters submerged under the ground, the next 12 meters submerged in water and they've only got a few meters exposed. And at the moment they've got someone with a crane wrapping the post around and it's dangerous, it's slow, it's inefficient. The PostMate, now, essentially it's a massive postmate, but it will just come and it will do that completely removing all the safety risks and way faster.

Sam [00:03:11]:
How did you get involved in this, in the whole story?

Harry [00:03:14]:
So I'm very lucky. I've worked with Warren Storey for a long time and around three years ago, me and my business partner, Shawn Watson approached him and said, warren, you need to take this to the world. And then around two years ago, you know how busy dairy farmers are, it was in the same place and we said, well, let's join forces and let's work together to really get this out into the industry. So, yeah, we came together to take it to the world.

Sam [00:03:40]:
This could be one of the better products I've seen at field days this year. It is only day one and this may be only our second interview, but don't let that put you off. Postmate is the. What have you got? Fastest, safest, smarter way to remove posts. So far, I know it's early. What's the feedback been like?

Harry [00:03:56]:
The feedback has been outstanding. We have been blown away with the amount of people that have stopped and they're almost saying the same comment. How has no one thought of this before? I've pulled thousands, thousands of posts and I thought, there has to be a better way. And bearing in mind, around the world we would have pulled billions. And this is the first time that such a simplistic design means you can do it with one person safer and faster. And them two very rarely come in the same sentence. Safer normally means slower, but here we have safety meets efficiency.

Sam [00:04:30]:
Yeah, a winning combo. Easy to see how this is, you know, going to expand further apart the six countries you've already got. Is it hard to keep up with demand?

Harry [00:04:40]:
So at the moment, we anticipated quite a exciting launch and we've been able to keep up and we are doing well to stay on top of it at the moment. But more eyes that are coming on it, the more people are realizing that putting someone underneath the loader and risking losing fingers, hurting themselves, being on ACC for six months, it is just not worth the risk. And then when they discover how much quicker it is, it does Seem like a no brainer, but we are keeping up at the moment.

Sam [00:05:08]:
Good to hear. Hey, in 12 months time, where do you hope to be in 12 months time?

Harry [00:05:12]:
I'd love to be speaking to you again and telling you about how in the last 12 months the amount of injuries we've prevented because it is great to see this spread further across around the world. But of course it is really great at the same time to know we are preventing a lot of injuries and we do anticipate to finish the rest of Europe, be in America and be around Australasia and hopefully the same way. Now if we see a donkey pulling a plough, we will want that to be. When we see someone with two men under the loader, we look at it and say that is a thing of the past.

Sam [00:05:47]:
I guess the biggest problem I see is just getting your message out there. But once someone sees one of these, sees the video and just understands how simplistic this is, how much time, how much safer it is and just it's just an all round great product, I think.

Harry [00:06:01]:
Thank you very much. And our socials, The PostMate on Facebook have been going really well because people just, even if you're not into farming, it is great to watch, it is fun to watch. And yeah, the videos really explain themselves.

Sam [00:06:16]:
Awesome. Hey Harry, we've got a bit of a tradition here. I'm going to show you a couple of random questions. You get to pick one and you can answer it for us. But if you could just read it out, that would be very cool. I'll just load this up. You pick one of those questions, read it out and give us your best answer.

Harry [00:06:32]:
I reckon I'm going to go with what is the absolute worst name you could possibly give a pet? Goldfish. Okay, okay, answer. I'll probably go with Pinky.

Sam [00:06:45]:
Pinky.

Harry [00:06:46]:
Yeah. Well, I think it's pretty counterintuitive. I wouldn't know otherwise. Or Stripey.

Sam [00:06:51]:
Stripey, we'll go with that. Thank you so much. Now where do people find out more about Post Mate? Don't get confused with postmates, that's something else.

Harry [00:07:00]:
But PostMate, yeah, The PostMate, we've got thepostmate.com or we have The PostMate on Facebook.

Sam [00:07:08]:
Go check them out, give them a like, share this around because you could be saving someone a lot of work and keeping them safer.

Harry [00:07:16]:
And we do a lot of competitions and a lot of giveaways too. So check it out, see what there is that's free. Also, being my Pomi accent, I always get pulled up on saying the so that's t h e the postmate.

Sam [00:07:28]:
That's right. We're used to it with The Chris and Sam Podcast, so people get used to that. Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Have a great rest of the field days.

Harry [00:07:35]:
Thank you very much to Chris and Sam and I look forward to checking out more of your stuff. You're doing awesome work.

Sam [00:07:40]:
